Life of an engineering student

After going through the six quotes provided, I felt like the one by Akbar R Khan really resonated with me as I’m currently a student as well. To start off, it is indeed harder for us students to be taken seriously as we have little to no work experience at all as we mainly focus on simpler and more isolated projects which do not have the same complexities as an actual project in an engineering company. This would deter us from being able to communicate properly as well due to the fact that as a university student, we might not be able to view communication as a very impactful factor in our industry because of the stereotypical thinking that engineering students are bad at communicating as there was barely any considerable emphasis placed on communication.

Furthermore, in proper engineering companies and industries, teams are more dynamic and the roles that each individual have are more specific compared to that in terms of the context of a class. Thus, without an exposure to the industry’s standards, we will not be able to understand the importance of how efficient and effective a team can be with the proper lines of communication between team members.

However, I hope that we as future engineers are able to break that stereotypical thinking of how engineers are bad at communication through modules such as this, where we are pushed out of our comfort zone and thrusted into the spotlight where we have to apply everything we have learnt.

  1. Interesting take on the quote. I resonate very well with the stereotype thinking of engineering students. In my experience, people would think of engineering students as badly dressed and socially awkward. I definitely hope that would change and we all can become better communicators so to break that stereotype away.

It would have been nice if you insert the quote into your blog as I had to find the quote in the pdf. Thanks and great work!

  2. Thank you, Denzel, for the highly detailed and insightful explanation. As Wen Jun mentions, inserting the quote would help remind that reader of what you're referring to.
