Functions and Features of the Tesla Advanced Driver Assistance System

The Tesla autopilot system, also known as the Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) is a revolutionary autopilot system designed to become fully autonomous in the near future (The Economic Times, 2023). Our research is focused primarily on the safety features of the system, the autopilot software and lastly how they all work in conjunction with the futuristic Graphical User Interface (GUI). There are three levels to the autopilot system which vary based on the features that come with it. It starts off with the basic autopiloting system, the enhanced autopiloting system and lastly the full self-driving capability system, which is the most expensive of the three (Ahsan, 2023). However, the autopilot system would not be able to work as well safety-wise if not for the Tesla vision, which has eight externally installed cameras around the vehicle. The cameras provide a 360-degree view of its surroundings, so as to identify whatever obstacles you might encounter on the road. Tesla recently made the switch from radar to cameras as they believed that the cameras will be able to view its surroundings and imitate the way a human brain works (Dnistran, 2023). However, experts have come out to dismiss this change as they are afraid it has a higher risk of accidents. If the cameras were somehow blocked or obscured by certain weather conditions such as the rain or strong sunlight shining on the cameras, it might compromise the car's performance (CARADAS, 2024).

Based on the functions and criteria mentioned above, the Tesla autopilot system does indeed enhance road safety through its futuristic technology but it still has much more room for improvement safety wise.

 After going through the six quotes provided, I felt like the one by Akbar R Khan really resonated with me as I’m currently a student as well. To start off, it is indeed harder for us students to be taken seriously as we have little to no work experience at all as we mainly focus on simpler and more isolated projects which do not have the same complexities as an actual project in an engineering company.
